Who makes it?
Montalto Savagnin is just one of the fine wines that the Mitchell family winery produces. They have a reputation for producing succulent Chardonnays and vibrant Pinot Noirs from Australia’s Mornington Peninsula. This is an interesting grape that the family embrace. Their passion for it means that this wine is a particular highlight.
When so many others decided to regraft or remove their Savagnin, Montalto have used it to their advantage. This wine sits very well within their overall wine offering. It may be hard to find, but it will be worth your while.
How do they make it?
The vines that produce the fruit for this wine come from a single acre in the Red Hill sub-region of Mornington Peninsula. The vineyard was supposed to be Albarino. However, this Savagnin blanc planting thrives here and it is heartening that the family embraces it for what it is. A variety capable of finesse and elegance worthy of remaining
The wine has been fermented in a stainless steel tank to maintain the fruit characters. When ferment finishes, the wine then spends some extra time maturing on lees to give texture and adds a little to the fruit weight.

What does it taste like?
Montalto Savagnin is a bolder version of Savagnin in Australia and it has a light creaminess to provide a backdrop to the fruit. It has some classic floral aromas to the lemon, pear and lightly spiced cream character. That light spicy cream aroma and flavour is from that carefully judged lees time. There is some minerality there as well. It is round, fleshier yet still medium body. This is largely due to the fresh acid backbone of this wine. That acid is what you should expect from the variety.
This is a wine that delivers generosity from the heart while maintaining elegance. There is a perfumed spiciness on the finish that will have you coming back for the next sip.
What to drink it with?
The Montalto Savagnin would be delicious with chicken pie, or a chicken pasta. Fish would also be good. As would haloumi salad or a whipped feta tartlet.
Cheese
Enjoy with bloomy cheeses, including Saint-Nectaire as well as a young hard cheese such as Manchego.
