Domaine l’Aigueliere La Cote Rousse

Who makes it?

The La Cote Rousse is one of the sought after wines from the Montpeyroux sub-region of Larzac in the Languedoc. Domaine l’Aigueliere is owned and run by the Commeyras family in this scenic area just to the North of Montpellier. Here, like the reds of Terrasses du Larzac that are beginning to capture winelovers attention, the vineyards are kept cool through the breeze from the Larzac plateau. It gives these wines a depth of complexity and an elegance that is rather more-ish. Particularly in this wine.

How they make it?

This is a blend of Syrah and Grenache from low yield vines. It may also have Mourvèdre as well. The grapes are hand picked and after ferment are matured in oak for 10 months.

What does it taste like?

The detail in this wine once it opened up is just part of its attraction. The red plum and lush cherry fruit, black pepper and a wild herb melds seamlessly with chocolate and smoky graphite. It is a lush, fuller bodied red that is juicy yet smooth with plush powdery tannins. The finish is long, with some charcuterie notes creeping in amongst the bramble and earthiness. It certainly makes a cracking alternative to the usual red suspects.

What to drink with it?

This wine does not need anything to shine. It is the type of wine that you might find hard to put down after that first sip.
