Calmel & Joseph L’Art du Vers Terrasses du Larzac

Who makes it?

Calmel & Joseph L’Art du Vers is one of three wines the producer makes from Terrasses du Larzac. Laurent Calmel and Jerome Joseph showcase wines the Languedoc-Roussilon. Undoubtedly, they are Southern France specialists and part of their focus is on the region Terrasses du Larzac.

And when that region produces reds that you should be drinking, why not?

Interestingly, Calmel & Joseph also produce a Picpoul Noir that you can read about here: Villa Blanche Picpoul Noir.

How do they make it?

In keeping with the Terrasses du Larzac regulations, this is a blend of three red grapes. The blend is Mourvèdre 50%, Syrah 25%, Grenache 25%. The L’Art du Vers spends six months in oak barrels. 20% of these are new barrels. The wine then rests for up to a further six months at least before it is released for sale. Only wines with at least 12 months maturity before release can carry the appellation’s name on the label.

That is the Terrasses du Larzac region’s signal of quality.

What does it taste like?

The peppery fruit on the nose is a good sign of what to expect here. Pepper leads, plum, and blackberry fruit with some spicy nutmeg. This dry red has a full body, some shapely tannins and a refreshing acid profile. The fruit is fleshed out by the time in oak, and it is ripe and ready to enjoy. This is good drinking.

What to drink it with?

Enjoy the Calmel & Joseph The L’Art du Vers with a hearty stew, or a burger. Or your Sunday roast.

Cheese

Semi-hard cheese such as Comte, Gruyere, or Manchego or a matured Cheddar will be a good match.
