CVNE Barrel Fermented Rioja Blanca

CVNE Barrel Ferment

Who makes it?

CVNE Barrel Fermented is a white Rioja made by one of Rioja’s pioneer wine companies. A company that now includes wines under Imperial, Vina Real, Contino and Monopole. White Rioja is usually overshadowed by the red wines of that esteemed Spanish wine region. With the rise in awareness of Spanish wines in general, the quality of these whites are becoming known at last.

How do they make it?

Viura is the most important white grape in this region of Spain. So, it is no surprise then that this wine is 100% Viura. Interestingy, Viura is the name of the Macabeo grape in Rioja. The juice is then fermented in new American barrels where it stays on lees for 4 months. It is further aged in bottle. The label has no aging designation, but don’t that deter you from buying this delicious wine.

What does it taste like?

The ripe peach has a citrus zing and the stone fruit deepens into more tropical depths as it opens in the glass. That barrel ferment has given this fruit a spicy polish and a light creaminess. It also adds some extra fruit weight and some rounded curves to this fuller bodied wine. Therefore, the wine falls more into the spicy and creamy realm of oaked white rather than oily or buttery. Especially along the fresh length of the palate.

What to drink with it?

This is a great food wine and an easy choice for grilled chicken or for a pear and brie tartlet.

Cheese

Try bloomy cheeses such as Camembert or a Comte.

Quickie review « The oak in this wine is very well judged, the fresh fruit has a creaminess that complements the ripeness of the Viura fruit. »
