Who makes it?
Oliver’s Taranga Fiano is always one that I look forward to tasting. I am always keen to see each new vintage, to see what how Corrina has honed the wine this time. Each vintage is a snapshot in time, showing the potential of this relatively new grape becoming more popular in Australian vineyards.
Corrina Wright is not only well respected and loved for her contribution to the Australian Wine Industry. She keeps that innovative spirit alive at the family winery. Corrina does all this whilst paying homage to the rich McLaren Vale history of the family’s wine heritage. She certainly deserves that moniker ‘Queen of Fiano’!
Not so long ago, Oliver’s Taranga also have released a traditional method Sparklinge Fiano. Because, why not! I am sure that this next expression of the grape will be only the beginning of the Fiano story that unfolds in the Oliver’s Taranga winery. Particularly since in 2017, Corrina visited Avellino DOCG, just to the east of Naples, to check out the wines being produced in region producing the finest examples of the grape in Italy. They call the fizz ‘The Hunt for Mrs Oliver’, so do try it whenever you see it!
How do they make it?
Corrina and her team use indigenous yeast for this wine. The grapes are all estate grown, McLaren Vale fruit. A small portion matures in French oak giving it some creaminess. Other than that, the grapes just do their thing.
What does it taste like?
This dry, fuller bodied white wine has a distinct creaminess to its intense, zippy lime citrus. There is a whiff of flowers there too. In the mouth, the wine takes on a light creaminess fleshing out the fruitiness. In amongst that fresh fruit, there is a mineral and spice definition and nutty savouriness.
What to drink it with?
It is a wine that you can enjoy with a plate full of BBQ octopus, salt and pepper squid or grilled fish rubbed with lemon myrtle and pepper. Before you do this though, you should take the time to enjoy a glass before sitting down to a meal.
Cheese
Oliver’s Taranga Fiano is a wine to enjoy with a herbed roulade, or a Mersey Valley.
