Jane Eyre Wines Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir

Who makes it?

Jane Eyre is an Australian winemaker that also puts her stamp on French wine, including this Beaujolais wine from Chenas. She is now well known for her expertise in Pinot Noir after vintages at Cullen in Margaret River, Felton Road, Central Otago and Ata Rangi in Martinborough. Her deft touch with making lighter reds serves her well, and this Mornington Peninsula Pinot reflects her care and her passion. There is also a Gippsland Pinot version which is very intriguing too.

How do they make it?

Older vine fruit (average 30 years old) was selected for this wine. Up to a quarter was whole bunch fermented and after ferment the wine spent 10 months in seasoned French oak to develop roundness, gentle complexity and to settle into its ways.

What does it taste like?

I have tasted a number of vintages of this wine now and remarkably, my notes are quite consistent. This Pinot is bright with raspberry and cherry fruit marked with some thyme, lavender flowers and an exotic spice mix. It is fuller in style but is very elegantly proportioned. The tannins are soft and shapely and the wine finishes in a spicy chocolate and raspberry flourish. It is a silky wine that leaves you wanting more.

You could cellar this wine for a few years, but it is excellent now with a few years on it already.

What to drink it with?

Sure, you can stick to the classics like duck and lamb. But I think if you wanted to have something like venison sitting on a swoosh of beetroot puree or even a herb crusted Tuna steak, this would work well.

Quickie review « Jane strikes a balance between power and elegance well in this wine. However, it is unmistakeably Pinot. »
