Henschke Keyneton Euphonium

Who makes it?

Keyneton Euphonium is one of Henschke’s vibrant red blends. The Henschke family is part of Australia’s First Families of Wine initiative and have a long history of winemaking in Australia. The family is also known as being one of the early champions of sustainable vineyard practices.  In particular, biodynamic and organic principles. 

The Eden Valley is also the home territory of the Henschke family. They have been making wine here since the 1860’s. The family name is one that is synonymous with outstanding quality. Fine red wine lovers may also recognise the family as producers of the Hill of Grace Shiraz. The Hill of Grace Shiraz is one of Australia’s finest red wines. Henry’s Seven and Johann’s Garden are two more of Henschke’s thoughtful red wine blends.

The name, Euphonium, is a tip of the hat to the Henschke family’s brass band formed in the mid 1800s however, it is a very elegantly styled red that is not bulbous in anyway.

How do they make it?

Each vintage the blend will change in the Keyneton Euphonium. However, it is a Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend. 

It will generally always be Shiraz with between 55 – nearly 60%. The Shiraz grapes are from vines that are up to 50 years old from vineyards in both Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. A truly ‘Barossa’ regional wine.  The wine then has a large portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Then comes the Cabernet Franc and Merlot. 

After ferment, the blend matures in oak for up to 20 months, although it is usually for 18 months.  The oak is a mix of mostly old French and American oak and a smaller portion of new French oak. 

What does it taste like?

This wine is full bodied, and undoubtedly rich. However, in saying that, there is a distinctive elegance to it. It is complex and detailed. Leaving the fruit fresh and vibrant. The concentrated fresh plums, violets, pepper, and dried thyme and mint sit atop the bass notes of chocolate, vanilla and earth.  Supple tannins are shapely in the mouth and that lush fruit extends long into the finish. 

This is a delicious blend to enjoy now or to cellar long term.

What to drink it with?

The Euphonium is an excellent and versatile choice that will match red meats. Indeed, just as well as it would with lightly spiced vegetarian dishes. Venison, duck would work just as well as beef and lamb. It is particularly a good match with dishes like slow cooked spare ribs with a cinnamon, anise, and five spice BBQ sauce and beef with black bean sauce.

Enjoy Keyneton Euphonium with hard matured cheeses and even Stilton.
